Overview
Explore a region of myths, legends, and traditions on a performance tour to England and Ireland. Students will learn how deeply ingrained music is in Irish culture by walking down the streets of Dublin, where the notes of local musicians float out of almost every pub. Stop for a visit to Blarney Castle and hear the legend of the Blarney Stone (hint: you might try kissing it). Get some inspiration from Shakespeare’s birthplace before continuing to London, where students may perform in Southwark Cathedral, Spitalfields Market, or Victoria Park Bandstand.

Get a feel for Ireland’s emerald beauty on an excursion around the Iveragh Peninsula on the panoramic coastal route, Ring of Kerry. Along the 112 miles of breathtaking views, you’ll spy 360 degrees of the vast Atlantic Ocean, the Lakes of Killarney, the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks (Ireland’s tallest mountains), and every shade of green known to the Emerald Isle.
Killarney performance
Take the stage and perform for local audiences in a venue that captures the spirit of the city.
Day 4
Blarney Castle visit
Stop for a visit to Blarney Castle, the medieval stone structure built on solid limestone around 1466. (The slivers of windows served as a defence, enabling Lord Blarney and his men to shoot arrows at invaders while staying protected from within.) Climb the spiral staircases to the top of the castle to kiss the Blarney stone. Legend promises that if you lean backwards and kiss the stone upside-down, you’ll be granted the “gift of the gab” (the privilege of babbling questionable commentary for seven years). Before you leave, wander the path to Rock Close to ponder the druidic circle of mystical stones. Enter Lord Blarney’s dungeon if you dare.
Rock of Cashel visit
Visit the Rock of Cashel, an extraordinary ruined abbey at the top of a hill near Cashel. This outcrop of limestone, stretching 197 feet into the sky, possesses sixteen centuries of history. It was the castled seat of the kings of Munster as far back as 360 CE and remained a royal fortress until 1101. Today there are ruins of a two-towered chapel, a cruciform cathedral, a round tower, and a cluster of other medieval monuments. Inside the cathedral, ancient carvings survive in excellent condition.
Travel to Dublin
Dublin city walk
Get a friendly introduction to Dublin with your Tour Director. Cross the Ha’Penny Bridge, stroll through the lively Temple Bar district, and stop at the Molly Malone statue. Along the way, see Georgian squares, castles, and cathedrals that showcase the character of Ireland’s capital.
Day 5
Saint Patrick’s Cathedral Dublin visit
Visit the national cathedral of the Church of Ireland, built on a site traditionally linked to St. Patrick’s early baptisms. A church has stood here since around 450 CE, making it the oldest Christian site in Dublin. The cathedral is primarily Early English in style and features an impressive 300-foot-long interior. It also houses the largest ringing peal of bells in Ireland and is closely associated with Jonathan Swift, who served as dean from 1713 to 1745 and is buried in the south aisle.
Trinity College and Book of Kells visit
Discover Trinity College, Ireland’s oldest university, founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I. The beautiful campus features cobbled squares, gardens, a picturesque quadrangle, and historic buildings dating from the 17th to 20th centuries. Trinity is also home to the Book of Kells, an 8th-century manuscript of the four Gospels, displayed in the Old Library.
Dublin performance
Take the stage and perform for local audiences in a venue that captures the spirit of the city.
Day 6
Ferry to Holyhead across the Irish Sea
Travel to Stratford
Shakespeare's Birthplace visit
Visit Shakespeare’s birthplace, a half-timbered house preserved to reflect family life in the 16th century that also contains a museum dedicated to his life. The modern Shakespeare Centre was built next door to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Bard's birth. Next, you’ll visit Anne Hathaway’s cottage. The cottage provides insight into the life of a family in Shakespearean times and many of the original furnishings are preserved inside.
LEAP Prime Time Shakespeare!
Create a prime time TV show fit for sixteenth-century England. Compare Shakespeare’s world to our own and see his timeless work in a fresh light.
Day 7
Travel to London via Oxford
Oxford University college guided visit
Explore the oldest English-speaking university in the world. Founded in 1096, Oxford got a big attendance boost in 1167, when a tiff between the English and French kings caused all English students to be expelled from the University of Paris. Many came back to Oxford, and since then the university has been home to many of England’s most illustrious thinkers and writers, including Sir Walter Raleigh, Roger Bacon -- and Dr. Seuss. With a local guide tour one of the 39 colleges that make up the university (colleges you may visit include Brasenose, Christ Church, or New College).
London city walk
Take a city walk through the heart of London. Cross Trafalgar Square, a lively gathering place for the city, and step inside the National Gallery, home to masterpieces by da Vinci, Monet, and Rembrandt. Continue past the bright lights of Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square, and finish in Covent Garden, where markets, street performers, and the Royal Opera House showcase London’s lively spirit.
Day 8
Westminster Abbey guided tour
Thames River cruise
Enjoy a Thames River Cruise, a relaxing way to view many of London's most magnificent sights. Our trip will take us past the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben and under the famous Tower Bridge.
Tower of London visit
Step inside the Tower of London, a vast 18-acre fortress of 20 towers, winding staircases, and hidden passages on the Thames. From the 11th to 16th centuries it served as royal palace, treasury, and prison. Learn the fate of Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, two wives of Henry VIII executed here, see the Crown Jewels with their dazzling 530-carat diamond, and hear stories brought to life by the Beefeaters who still guard its gates.
Day 9
British Museum visit
Explore the British Museum, home to one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of art and artifacts. Highlights include the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon Marbles, and the Sutton Hoo Treasure.
St. Paul’s Cathedral visit
Visit St. Paul's Cathedral, Sir Christopher Wren's Renaissance-style masterpiece and yet another home to a stunning resident choir. Our visit will include an ascent to the Whispering Gallery, an acoustic marvel in which the faintest whisper can be heard clearly on the opposite side. We also will visit the American Memorial Chapel. If we are lucky, we will be present when the organ is being played.
London performance
Take the stage and perform for local audiences in a venue that captures the spirit of the city.
